چکیده

[1] A technique for the estimation of humidity in the lower troposphere using simultaneous dual‐wavelength radar observations is proposed and tested. The method compares the reflectivity from clouds and precipitation of a non‐attenuated wavelength (S‐band, 10 cm) and an attenuated wavelength (Ka‐band, 8 mm) to compute the clear‐air gaseous attenuation at the attenuated wavelength. These estimates are of total gaseous attenuation on radar ray segments that extend from the radar to a cloud/precipitation echo or from one echo to another. The attenuation estimates are then used to compute the path‐integrated humidity, which is plotted at the midpoint of the ray segments. Using estimates at several elevation angles and different ranges, a profile of humidity through the lower troposphere can be retrieved. The retrieved humidity compared favorably to proximity in situ soundings with root mean square difference values between the retrieval and sounding ranging from 0.14 to 0.85 g m (approximately 2–6% relative error, respectively).

Water vapor and liquid water estimates using simultaneous S and Ka band radar measurements

Using simultaneous S and Ka band observations it is possible to retrieve a path integrated value of the water vapor content as well as cloud liquid water content values using the atmospheric and liquid water attenuation properties at the two frequencies. Recently the NCAR S-band dual polarimetric (S-Pol) radar has been upgraded to include simultaneous Ka-band radar measurements (Farquharson et ...

Liquid water content estimates using simultaneous S and Ka band radar measurements

[1] A technique for the estimation of total liquid water content (LWC; the sum of cloud water and rainwater contents) using simultaneous S and Ka band scanning radar observations is proposed and tested using the National Center for Atmospheric Research simultaneous S band and Ka band dual‐polarimetric (S‐PolKa) radar system. The sources of error for this wavelength pair are evaluated, and the m...

Retrieval of Raindrop Size Distribution, Vertical Air Velocity and Water Vapor Attenuation Using Dual-Wavelength Doppler Radar Observations

Two techniques for retrieving the slope and intercept parameters of an assumed exponential raindrop size distribution (RSD), vertical air velocity, and attenuation by precipitation and water vapor in light stratiform rain using observations by airborne, nadir looking dual-wavelength (X-band, 3.2 crn and W-band, 3.2 rnm) radars are presented. In both techniques, the slope parameter of the RSD an...

We have examined the precision of interferometric SAR measurements of surface deformation of the Earth using 24-cm wavelength data acquired by the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite 1 (JERS 1) spacecraft, over the lzu peninsula, Japan. Radar images acquired from 1993 to 1994 were made into eleven independent interferograms. Apparent water vapor signatures with equivalent path delay up to 16 cm ...

Use of Dual-wavelength Radar for Snow Parameter Estimates

Use of dual-wavelength radar, with properly chosen wavelengths, will significantly lessen the ambiguities in the retrieval of microphysical properties of hydrometeors. In this paper, a dual-wavelength algorithm is described to estimate the characteristic parameters of the snow size distributions. An analysis of the computational results, made at X and Ka bands (T-39 airborne radar) and at S and...
